My Name Is Yossi Gross And I Have A ‘Personal’ Confession To Make

Have You Ever Seen A Grown Man Cry?

How can you help replace tears of sadness with tears of joy?

I Guarantee You Will Have The Answer After You Read This Entire Letter. If You Don’t I Will Give You A Crisp $100 Bill To Compensate You For Your Time.

Dear Friend,

On Tuesday evening, January 24, 2006, Rabbi Rosen, the Executive Director of A TIME, (A Torah Infertility Medium of Exchange), called me up asking if he could stop by my house and share something very important with me. I immediately made myself available to meet with him.

Within 25 minutes he knocked on my door and we sat down to talk. We spoke about the upcoming Chinese Auction that A TIME had planned and how I could help. We ended the conversation promising to speak again to finalize things. Before leaving Rabbi Rosen turned to me and handed me a CD and said, “Take a look at this when you get a chance, however you were planning on helping I guarantee that you’ll want to do more after watching this.”

Well curiosity got to me. I inserted the CD and began to watch. It was a tape of the Annual Shabbaton that A TIME runs for infertile couples. It is a chance for couples to get away from their pain and join together with people who really understand them. Two minutes passed by and I Started To Cry. I think weeping would be a better description of it. There I was a grown man crying like a little boy.

As I watched the annual Shabbaton, I couldn't believe my eyes. People like you and me, just ordinary people that wake up every morning and go to sleep every night, yet they are missing something so precious – they face day after day worried that they might never have children.

What is ‘A TIME’ ?

I’ve always respected Rabbi Rosen’s dedication to A TIME, I just really never knew what they did.

Everyone knows A TIME is an organization that helps people with infertility, but how?

As I researched more into this amazing organization I started to hear from the some of the 7,146 couples that A TIME has helped about how much A TIME meant to them. The support they receive, both emotional and financial. I never would have believed how much one organization could do over the past 15 years.

When I first heard of A TIME they were a small organization, some support groups, a newsletter. Today A TIME is at the forefront of infertility research. They are well known by doctors and rabbanim.

They offer roundtable discussions, support groups, medical and halachic referrals, insurance advocacy, a fully equipped website along with support message boards, a help line, in-house therapy, a lending library, peer support, quarterly magazines, weekend retreats, interest free loans, adoption information as well as financial assistance for medicine, travel and lodging and all of the many expenses associated with the infertility nightmare.

Mrs. Lefkowitz, a member of A TIME, put it this way, “Infertility is hard. Infertility is painful. Infertility is lonely. A TIME is an island of support and guidance. They do it with incredible sensitivity.”

Click on the link below to listen to Mrs. Lefkowitz’ and Mrs. Hershkowitz’ entire testimonials what A TIME has done for them.

A TIME’ Builds Generations of Yiddishe Kinderlach

In addition to the support which A TIME gives to couples struggling with infertility, A TIME is well known as being at the forefront of infertility research and education. A TIME provides these couples with information and guidance. Information is the key to success for an infertile couple. A TIME takes people out of the dark and arms them with the ability to control their own treatments, choose the right doctors and procedures, and ask the right questions. More importantly, A TIME helps couples do everything within the framework of Halacha. Their rabbinical experts guide couples with regards to treatments, procedures and shabbos observance.

Each A TIME success story is precious. It takes a couple from agony to pure joy and nachas. It creates life – but most importantly it builds generations of Yiddishe Kinderlach.

‘A TIME’ is my Lifeline

Most couples referred to A TIME as their LIFELINE”. They expressed how they were drowning, spending every day surrounded by other people’s nachas and aching for their own. They all spoke of how they felt like there was no one in the world to help them… until they found A TIME.

Many spoke of the emotional rollercoaster they were on, about the constant pain and embarrassment, about how family and friends cannot relate and how all too often well meaning people cause so much pain.

Most couples spoke of how they look forward to the A TIME gatherings as they are the only time of real simcha that they have. It’s the only time they don’t have to put on a smile and face the world while they are crumbling inside.

They spoke of the achdus at the Shabbaton, how men from all different realms of Yiddishkeit danced together as if they were at the greatest simcha imaginable. I heard people speak of the level of kedusha they felt when they all davened in the same room.

Since that Shabbos, 74 A TIME couples became proud parents. 74 families who with Hashem’s help and through A TIME’s support and commitment, have now gone M’Yagon L’Simcha, from pain and sorrow to pure joy.

“I Couldn’t Stop My Tears From Flowing”

As I watched the annual Shabbaton, I was shocked. Some were people I knew, people I had gone to school with, daven in shul with. These were regular people with a private pain so great it shatters them. People who wonder if they will ever hold their own baby in their arms.

I couldn’t stop my tears from flowing. I was so overwhelmed and my heart was breaking for all those who have suffered so long. They have tried everything possible, they have spent so much money yet their hearts remain broken.

Money Can’t Fix A Broken Heart!

I have heard people ask, is there really a need for an organization that provides support?

Don’t these couples need money for treatments that will solve their problems?

Unfortunately, there are couples who no matter how much money they spend have spent years looking for help. The pain and suffering they’ve endured is unimaginable. The only thing that is getting them through one day at A TIME is A TIME. Money cannot solve everything. It can’t fix a broken heart.

What Could I Do To Help These Couples?

There was so much I wanted to do for these couples, so much I wanted to say. But then I stopped. How many people had already given their words of wisdom to these heartbroken couples? How many arrows had already penetrated their hearts?

Through my research I had heard countless couples speak of the pain and embarrassment that they endured from well meaning people who were ‘just trying to help’. Couples expressed how unsolicited advice usually turned out to be more hurtful than helpful.

What is A TIME? Watch this Presentation

We all want to help, yet we need to be so careful to give them the right type of help. And that is the essence of what A TIME does. A TIME, knowing what these individuals need to hear at each step of the way, understanding a pain that is unimaginable to us, gives these families the courage to face each day.

In memory of my uncle, R’ Yitzchok Boruch ben R’ Moshe Kraynick zt”l

As I continue watching the joy of this group spending a Shabbos together and being able to share their pain with each other, memories of the Shabbosim I spent by my Great Uncle, R’ Yitzchok Boruch Kraynik zt”l come to mind. He never had children and had to ask family members to name after his parents and grandparents. I carry his grandfather’s name and my son carries his name.

I can only imagine how different his life would have been had an organization like A TIME existed when he was struggling with infertility. How much joy and happiness he would have enjoyed instead of the pain, sadness and loneliness. I remember him as always keeping a positive outlook, always hoping. Now I know that he really had no one to share his anxieties with and no one to support him.

So when Rabbi Rosen later asked me if I wanted to get involved, I knew that I couldn’t say no. For the sake of all the A TIME couples and in memory of my uncle, R’ Yitzchok Boruch ben R’ Moshe Kraynick zt”l, I decided to do what I can to help these courageous individuals face their challenges ahead.

I am honored to be serving as Journal Chairperson at the A TIME Annual Dinner on Monday, January 21st, TU B’Shvat.

“Asakta B’Pirya U’Rivya?”

We will all be asked after 120 years - “Asakta B’Pirya U’Rivya?” Were we busy with the mitzvah of helping people have children? It’s never been easier. Without worrying that we are overstepping our bounds, without feeling uncomfortable facing people’s pain, we need only support those who do it best. We must help A TIME continue to support these families. We must lend our support and show these couples that they are not alone.

What will you answer after 120 years? Will you be able to answer that you supported A TIME? That you helped give chizuk to so many couples struggling with infertility? That not only did your support help bring babies into the world, but you helped to build generations of Yiddishe Kinderlach.

‘Vegam ani shamati es naakas benai yisrael’

At the beginning of Parashat Va'ara, Hashem says ‘Vegam ani shamati es naakas benai yisrael’—I too have heard the cries of klal yisrael. The question is: Who had heard the cries of klal yisrael first, that Hashem is now saying, “I TOO have heard the cries”, as if to say that Hashem is hearing the cries second after someone else?

Rabbi Noach Isaac Oelbaum shlita answers—In Mitzrayim when one yid came home from a day of backbreaking work and he would sit with another yid and unburden himself from his pains and frustrations and the other yid would listen to him, commiserate with him, and cry with him. And the next day the other yid would come home and he would now unburden himself from his pains and frustrations and his friend would listen to him, commiserate with him, and give him chizuk or maybe just cry with him.

Hashem saw this and said “Vegam ani”, I too hear the cries of klal yisrael and in that zechus Hashem said, I will take the yidden out of Mitzrayim.

When we show our support for A TIME, when we help give support to couples struggling with infertility, when we join together to listen to our fellow yid and commiserate with our fellow yid and cry with our fellow Yid, then hopefully, Hashem will say, ‘Vegam ani shamati es naakas benai yisrael’—I too hear the cries of the couples waiting to have children.

How Can You Help?

So how can you help? Support A TIME. Hashem has given these unique people, this special organization, the ability to reach the hearts of those who are broken. You must make sure that they can continue to do so. And then daven. Have these families in mind each time you pray, and beg Hashem to bless them with full arms.

With Hashem’s help and your support , may klal yisrael grow and expand as every couple with empty arms will be’ezrat Hashem this time next year, be holding a precious bundle of joy in their arms.
